Senator Lashrecse Aird (D-Henrico) wants to create a cost-sharing program where the state and businesses would put money in the pot to help make child care more affordable for Virginia families. “Families have been complaining about two things — accessibility [and] finding access to child care, and then when they do find it, being able to afford it,” Aird told 8News. The proposed Employee Child Care Assistance Program is designed to incentivize businesses to pay some of the cost of their employees’ child care by matching the amount of money businesses contribute with state funds.

Standing Together Against Suspension & Expulsion in Early Childhood (opens in new window)
Expulsion in early childhood education is not an intervention. Over a decade of research and data tell us that the policies and practices of suspension and expulsion in early childhood, which disproportionately affect children of color, are causing harm to children and families. Find resources for teachers, administrators, policymakers, states and districts that offer data, toolkits, models and templates to help change our policies and practices.
Preventing Suspensions and Expulsions (opens in new window)
Suspensions and expulsions of young children are not developmentally appropriate practices. Yet, recent data indicate that suspension and expulsion occur regularly in early childhood settings. These exclusionary practices, which disproportionately impact children of color, deprive children of valuable learning experiences and have a negative impact on children’s development that extends into grade school and beyond. Eliminating all forms of exclusion is urgent and vital to preparing all children for success.
