Position Title:            Family Engagement Advocate

About Thrive Birth to Five:  Thrive Birth to Five (TB5) has been the early childhood systems building organization in the Richmond Region since 2007 and was designated Ready Region Central by the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation and the Virginia Department of Education in 2022 and again in 2025. TB5’s regional early childhood coalition convenes 125+ diverse public and private organizations to work collectively to ensure all children are ready to succeed in school, work, and life. Partners include childcare entities, school systems, state and local government, nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, and local businesses. Our region includes the counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, Powhatan, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex counties, as well as the cities of Colonial Heights, Emporia, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Richmond. 

About this role: The Family Engagement Advocate will work in partnership with families to develop their understanding of the complex Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) landscape, facilitate connections with community resources and support a diverse family council. The Family Engagement Advocate will support Ready Region Central in efforts to incorporate authentic family voice into the ECCE system, with a particular focus on reaching underserved communities and promoting  equity and inclusion.  Emphasizing Ready Regions Central’s goals are key: Strong Families & Communities, Equitable Access, Child Well-being, Quality Programs, and Regional Early Childhood Capacity.

Among the primary duties of the Family Engagement Advocate:  

  1.  Support Family Voice
  • Recruit, support and develop families’ skills to be early childhood champions and active in Family Council.
  • Facilitate meetings in person and virtually.
  • Participate in community events to promote TB5 and increase knowledge of child care subsidies, public school options, and eligibility
  • Engage with families to identify barriers and collaborate with community partners to implement solutions that will lead to more family centered pathways to quality early care and education.
  • Develop collaborations between families and decision- makers
  • Collaborate with Thrive Birth to Five team members to ensure Family Voice is incorporated into all aspects of our work
  1. Disseminate information
  • Collaborate with community partners throughout the region to promote preschool registration and increase knowledge of child care subsidies and eligibility.
  • Research community resources for families and organize/maintain accurate, up-to-date information to facilitate families access to resources.
  • Provide opportunities for families of children birth to 5 to share their experiences through surveys, focus groups, and research studies.
  • Share data with families with a focus on continuous engagement, increasing knowledge and creating a culture of curiosity
  1. Build Relationships
  • Develop families’ advocacy skills to build confidence in sharing child care/community experiences with local partners including legislators at the local, state, and federal level
  • Support Virginia Promise Partnership family engagement
  • Prioritize and support expansion of equity-centered family engagement with our partners
  • Collaborate with community partners and families to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the Family Engagement Plan in Ready Region Central.
  1. Collect Data and Implement Plan
  • Complete region-wide Family Engagement Self-Assessment in collaboration with the Family Council
  • Assist in the dissemination and development of surveys, plans and other methods of evaluation to analyze and measure progress towards goals.
  • Collect and enter data on Family Council participation, demographics, and barriers
  • Complete monthly reports
  • Track Family Council participation and activities for compensation

  Capabilities and Background:

  • A capacity builder focused on creating effective, equitable networks.
  • Seek out, foster, and sustain relationships that promote family voice.
  • Foster a regional culture of equity, trust, transparency, and shared accountability for documented outcomes that are driven by efficient and effective use of community resources.
  • A community advocate with knowledge in early childhood education

 Education/Experience/Skills/Qualifications: 

  • Education/Experience: 3-5 years’ experience in family and engagement, preferably related to early childhood or education. Experience in project leadership that includes coordinating with multiple stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes while tracking and reporting progress. Bilingual (Spanish) an asset.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal communication and facilitation/mediation skills, dedication to community service, ability to confront challenging obstacles to achieve a resolution to problems. Capacity to maintain integrity and confidentiality. Exhibits cultural sensitivity and has experience working with people from diverse backgrounds. Communicates well orally, in person, by telephone, and in writing.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen relationships and to forge new ones.
  • Collaboration: Effective at working with partners in diverse and complex networks to reach common goals and objectives.
  • Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong partnerships both internally and externally – including individuals, families, early care providers, and stakeholders with a commitment to equity.
  • Technology: Ability to use technology effectively (Microsoft Suites, communications platforms, other software)

Salary: $46,000-$52,000

The position is eligible for a competitive salary and benefits package, including health and dental insurance with generous employer contributions, employer paid short-term and long-term disability and life insurance. Accrued vacation up to 20 days per full year. Hybrid work is an option after a training period, up to two days per week.

Anticipated start date: March 2025

About Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5): Communities across Virginia participate in a birth-to-age 5 quality system that supports school readiness for Virginia’s children served in publicly funded early childhood care and education (ECCE) classrooms. These efforts are supporting Virginia’s implementation of a unified rating and improvement system to increase access to quality early care and education programs. The unified focuses on effective interactions and experiences for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers across all early education program types, particularly those who are most vulnerable and farthest from opportunity.

Purpose of the Position:
The Early Childhood Development Administrative Coordinator, under the direction of the Manager, Early Childhood Development, will help Thrive Birth to Five implement Ready Region Central deliverables. The ideal candidate will be a problem solver who has excellent communication skills and impeccable attention to detail. The candidate should also have experience working in an office environment, performing administrative tasks, and providing support to coworkers. An ability to multitask, manage complex schedules, and meet deadlines is essential to the position.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Distribute, collect, and process necessary contractor documentation and data
  • Register training participants and track training data and follow up
  • Enter and verify data across multiple software platforms and support ECCE programs and CLASS observers to ensure all deadlines are met
  • Verify and process invoices, incentives and stipends for multiple projects
  • Manage VQB5 & CLASS materials inventory
  • Organize and schedule company meetings in the office, off-site, and via videoconference
  • Assist in the preparation of regularly scheduled reports
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Education/Experience/Skills/Qualifications: 

  • Tech Savvy: Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills. Experience in Customer Relations. Preferred experience in Salesforce, Basecamp, Canva, Constant Contact, and/or LinkB5.
  • Administrative Experience:Proven administrative experience. Flexible, detail oriented, and deadline driven. Good written and verbal communication skills. Solution-oriented problem solving and strong time management skills.
  • Customer Relations:Proven experience in Customer Relations. Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships both internally and externally – including ECCE providers, educators, community partners and contractors.
  • Education/Experience: Two years’ experience in an administrative role or data entry/bookkeeping role. High school degree required, bachelor’s degree preferred.


Salary: $42,000-$46,000

The position is eligible for a competitive salary and benefits package, including health and dental insurance with generous employer contributions, employer paid short-term and long-term disability and life insurance. Accrued vacation up to 20 days per full year. Hybrid work is an option after a training period, up to two days per week.
